Developing a Strategy for Online Sociology Courses
There are not a lot of online degrees in sociology to be found currently. There are a number of social service degrees, and degrees with various titles that are oriented to human services. Sociology is a different field than social service however. It is much more scientifically oriented and relies heavily on research. For the moment, there are relatively few online colleges that are tackling degree programs in the social sciences.
However there are a number of schools offering courses in sociology. This is where the strategy component comes into play. If you are interested in obtaining a degree in sociology and wish to do so online, you will have to assemble the required components piecemeal. If you are an individual with some college credits already in your portfolio, you need to determine to what degree you have met the core requirements for a liberal arts degree. Those will vary from school to school, but not to a radical degree.
If you have yet to complete the basics for a bachelor’s degree, consider doing that first. Do so with an eye to what credits will be easily transferable, and then go looking for an online school with the sociology courses you want. You may have to look to more than one online school in order to assemble sufficient courses in sociology to qualify for a baccalaureate.
Then the question becomes, “Which school’s requirements do I have to meet?” The answer would seem to be the last one, which will take all your credits on transfer and provide you with the final sociology courses you need. It’s going to take some sleuthing, but consider it a college-level challenge.
If you’d like to be a little more straightforward, the University of Colorado at Denver actually does offer a bachelor’s degree in sociology online. Some courses are not available every semester however, so even that program takes planning. http://www.cuonline.edu/
