Many post-secondary art schools have industrial design majors. In major universities, you will usually find industrial design majors within art departments or 'art and design' departments. Issues that you need to consider include the question of internship, and whether or not the school has a placement program for its graduates. There are currently about 50,000 industrial designers working in this country, and one third of them are self employed. Opportunities are not easily found and the connections that your school maintains may be important.
An excellent resource both for guidance in selecting a school and for a list of schools that have industrial design programs is http://www.core77.com/. The IDSA website is also informative for people who are interested in the profession. Both sites make it clear that the student who wants to major in industrial design needs to have a firm grip on personal goals before selecting a school.
