Medical Records Technicians or Health Information Technicians are the professionals who manage the data stream generated by every patient. Patient health care today results in a complex set of Medical Records: these include the observations, treatment information, symptoms and medical history along with the results of examinations, reports of x rays and laboratory tests and diagnoses.
Some Medical Records and Health Information Technicians specialize in coding patients’ Medical Information for Insurance purposes. Technicians who specialize in coding are called Health Information Coders, or Coding Specialists. These technicians assign a code to each diagnosis and procedure.
Most employers prefer to hire Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT), who must pass a written examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). To take the examination, a person must graduate from a 2-year Associate Degree Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education
