A Physician Assistant practices medicine under the supervision of a doctor. PAs are formally trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services, as delegated by a physician. On occasion they will perform the function of an RN, taking medical histories and making preliminary examinations. They are authorized to order and interpret lab work, x-rays and other tests. They also treat minor injuries, by suturing, splinting, and casting. This job is very similar to that performed by many Nurse Practitioners
Physician Assistant education programs usually last at least 2 years; admission requirements vary by program, but many require at least 2 years of college and some health care experience. All States require physician assistants to complete an accredited education program and to pass a national exam in order to obtain a license. Preliminary work towards this profession may provide sufficient training to enter the Health CareProfession at a lesser level while you continue your studies.
