Once again, this is a field where the applicable rule of thumb is "Student, know thyself." There are lots of art schools and design academies; what is critical is that you know going in what you want to have under your arm coming out. That calls for researching the commercial market - "Are there jobs, and what does it take to get one?" It also calls for a program that stresses the basics along with the technical expertise. That paragraph quoted above speaks to the fact that what you learn at the outset is going to dictate your end product. Your end product - your portfolio - is the beginning of your career.
