Fashion Designers help create the billions of clothing articles, shoes, and accessories purchased every year by consumers. Designers study fashion trends, sketch designs of clothing and accessories, select colors and fabrics, and oversee the final production of their designs. About two thirds of the Fashion Designers working today are employed in New York or Los Angeles.
The Fashion Design Industry has come to rely on Computer Aided Design (CAD) as part of their production process. While most designers initially sketch designs by hand, a growing number transfer their designs to Digital Format. CAD allows designers to view designs of clothing on virtual models and in various colors and shapes, thus saving time by requiring fewer adjustments later. In addition to creativity and sketching ability, fashion designers also need to have sewing and patternmaking skills, even if they do not perform these tasks themselves.
