Online Psychology Degrees

Online is a Good Choice for a Psychology Degree

Psychology is one of those fields of study where an online school makes good sense.  The obvious benefits are there with any field of study: at an online school your class hours are pretty much your own, materials are provided via the internet and communication is not limited to certain hours or places.  But in the field of psychology, you can replicate the classroom experience almost entirely through the distance learning process.  It is only if you are studying in an area where clinical internship hours are required that you will need to find an online school that has a working arrangement for supervised clinical hours near your place of residence.

Choices in Online Psychology Degrees

The options in online psychology degrees go well beyond the standard choices of associate's; bachelor's; master's; and doctorate.   There are many areas of specialty today that can lead a psychology major into a number of interesting careers in the business sector.  There are also levels of counseling and clinical practice that require licensure, so people interested in those choices need to be acquainted with the licensing procedures in the state where they intend to practice.  Many online schools are already acquainted with these requirements, at least in the states where they operate campuses as well as distance learning.  Talk to the schools that you are considering about the path to licensure, as well as the requirements for a degree.

Ashford University offers a baccalaureate in psychology that is designed to prepare the student for a variety of career paths.   The course catalogue notes that "Psychology graduates are employed in practically all fields, including human resource assistants, training and development coordinators, customer service representatives, training coordinators ..."  To that you can add opportunities in the community mental health field and in the area of substance abuse.

Capella University has one of the most comprehensive online psychology programs that you will find.   They have both master's and doctoral programs that are, to some degree, designed for people who have already had some college experience and want to change careers.  Their master's in psychology includes these areas of emphasis:

  • General Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Counseling Psychology
  • Educational Psychology
  • Industrial/Organizational Psychology
  • School Psychology
  • Sport Psychology

The clinical and counseling majors speak for themselves.  A master's in Educational Psychology can lead you into the field of school psychology: working on campus with primary and secondary students.  Sport Psychology can involve working with sports teams in clinics or with coaching staffs.  Industrial/Organizational Psychology (IO) graduates work in business environments, helping in developing guidelines for human resources departments, developing teamwork programs and structures, and working with management on designing workplace systems that improve both employee morale and productivity.

The Capella PhD program has these areas of emphasis:

  • General Psychology
  • Educational Psychology
  • Industrial/Organizational Psychology

We touched on IO Psychology in the paragraph above.  At the doctoral level, Educational Psychology might take you into research and program development around the teaching and learning process.  There is an entire body of work - theories, research, methodology - devoted to this field.
