In the hotel and hospitality industries, service occupations are by far the largest occupational group, accounting for 65 percent of the industry’s employment.
Hotels employ many young workers and others in part-time and seasonal jobs. Larger properties offer a variety of services for their guests, including a range of restaurant and beverage service options—from coffee bars and lunch counters to cocktail lounges and formal fine-dining restaurants. All of these on-site services provide opportunities for service employment in the hotelsand resorts that make up much of the hospitality industry. From laundry services to food service to skills such as fitness training or cosmetician, there are a number of opportunities that lead to service occupations in the hospitality business. Many young people enter the industry as untrained workers in the maintenance or housekeeping divisions and work their way into supervisory or more skilled positions in departments such as catering. The service area in the hospitality business is a great place to move up the ladder with online certificates or degrees that qualify you for mid-level positions.
