Surgical Technologists, also called “Surgical Technicians” or “Operating Room Technicians,” assist in surgeries under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses or other surgical personnel. They are one of the members of an operating room team which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists and circulating nurses.

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for setting up the Operating Room by arranging the sterile drapes, sterile solutions, surgical equipment and positioning any ancillary imaging equipment. They test all equipment scheduled for use to determine that it is functioning correctly.  Technologists also prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving and disinfecting incision sites.

Surgical Technologists advance by specializing in a particular area of surgery, such as Neurosurgery or Open Heart Surgery. They also may work as Circulating Technologists, one of the background members of the surgical team who prepare patients and assist with anesthesia.  This is a non-sterile function, but may also involve obtaining and opening packages for "sterile" persons to remove the contents during procedures.
